Why You Shouldn’t Expect Favors

Descriptive vs. Prescriptive Expectations

In Holacracy practice, we talk a lot about “expectations.” Including things like, “You can’t expect to do things outside of their roles.” At first, statements like this may sound like, “Nobody will help anyone else,” or, “Just look out for yourself.” But that’s not what it’s saying.

For me, the key to understanding how and why Holacracy includes rules like, “Implicit expectations carry no weight,” is understanding a distinction between two different types of expectations. I hope it helps.
